Moral Courage

Know what you stand for. Act on it.

Moral Courage is a 3-day program for people who want to navigate the world with greater integrity.

You don’t need a title or a mandate. Influence isn’t assigned. It emerges from how you show up, what you say, and what you choose not to ignore. That is enough to be here.

This program goes beyond moral ambition. Wanting to do the right thing is not enough. Moral courage isn’t a value you hold. It’s a capacity you develop.

Over these three days, you will:

  1. Recognize: see moral complexity clearly, in the world around you and in yourself, including where it is absent and where fear or pressure are quietly shaping choices;

  2. Orient: develop a stronger inner compass, so you can make decisions you can stand by, even when they come at a cost;

  3. Act: make it concrete. You leave with more than insight. You leave with direction.

Facilitated by The Unfold Academy, in collaboration with Alan McSmith, you’ll discover what it means to choose what is just, even when it feels uncomfortable. When it comes at a cost.

Leadership Development

Why this program?

“You cannot get through a single day without having an impact on the world around you. What you do makes a difference, and you have to decide what kind of difference you want to make.”

Jane Goodall

This is not about becoming “better” as a person; it’s about becoming more reliable under pressure.

Over the course of these days, you will explore:

  • Who am I beyond role, function or position?
  • How do patterns, fears and triggers influence my choices?
  • Where am I guided by fear, and where by trust?
  • How do power, systems and external pressure shape my choices?
  • What is my shadow and how does it show up in my leadership?

This program will help you to:

  • Make clearer, more confident decisions under pressure and uncertainty;
  • Develop an internal decision framework you can rely on when stakes are high;
  • Lead with consistency so your decisions and communication create clarity;
  • Strengthen alignment between purpose, strategy and daily execution;
  • Build the capacity to hold complexity without control, avoidance or quick fixes.

We step into nature for three days, away from screens, schedules and fixed structures. Back to basics.

You will stay at Landgoed Welna, surrounded by forest and sleep in a tent. The simplicity of the setting supports presence, reflection and reconnection.

The program is guided by facilitators from The Unfold Academy, together with Alan McSmith. His starting point is both simple and radical: we are nature. By restoring this connection, we gain access to deeper inner knowing, clarity and direction.

What you can expect:

  • Reflection and dialogue in small groups;
  • Hiking extensively during the day;
  • Sleeping (in tents) surrounded by nature;
  • Experiential practices in and with nature guided by Alan McSmith;
  • Silence, slowing down (digital detox) and space for personal insight;
  • Next steps mapping: translate insights into concrete steps to contribute.

These days are not an escape from reality, but a return to what is essential, so that you can act with greater clarity and strength afterwards.

Moral Courage is for people who:

  • Sense moral complexity in their work or life but find it hard to name, let alone act on;
  • Recognize moments where moral courage was absent, in others, in systems, or in themselves, and don’t want to look away anymore;
  • Feel the tension between what is expected of them and what they know to be right;
  • Want to develop a clearer inner compass and the courage to use it;
  • Understand that influence is not about position, but about how you show up;
  • Are ready to move from awareness to action: what will I actually do with this?

Alan
McSmith

Alan is a South African wilderness guide, storyteller, and motivational speaker whose life’s work bridges ancient wisdom and modern leadership. His insight is clear: nature is not a place we visit; it is us, and we are it. Its conservation is therefore not only about protecting outer landscapes, but about preserving the inner, sacred landscapes that define us as human beings.

With over 35 years of experience living and guiding in the African wilderness, Alan has accompanied thousands of people through some of the most remote and pristine regions of Africa, including the Okavango Delta, the Kalahari Desert, and the Namib. His work is grounded in deep presence, careful observation, and a profound respect for the living systems we are part of. Alan’s presence (as part of the program) and approach are expected to have a profound and lasting impact on participants.

Leadership under pressure is shaped less by intention than by inner state.

Under pressure, the #1 risk factor in leadership is acting on autopilot, losing conscious authorship over one’s choices.

# 1

Leaders who develop inner awareness make clearer decisions, navigate complexity with greater integrity and are less driven by fear or external pressure.
